Court grants El-Rufai medical access as ICPC trial continues today in Kaduna

The Federal High Court in Kaduna has granted former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, permission to access medical treatment under strict ICPC supervision as his trial on money laundering charges continues.

El-Rufai, alongside co-defendant Mr. Joel Adoga, is facing a 10-count charge filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over alleged conversion and possession of proceeds of corruption, as well as money laundering offences under the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. Both defendants have pleaded not guilty.

At Wednesday’s sitting before Justice Rilwan Aikawa, defence counsel led by Oluwole Olaniyan SAN moved a motion seeking variation of the ₦200 million bail conditions earlier granted to El-Rufai.

The prosecution, represented by Dr. Agada Akogwu, opposed the application through a counter-affidavit. The court adjourned ruling on the bail variation to Thursday, May 7, 2026.

During the proceedings, defence counsel also made a compassionate plea for the court to direct the ICPC to allow El-Rufai access to dental and eye care at designated facilities in Abuja.

The court granted the request, ordering that the former governor be conveyed under strict supervision to Mile Dental Clinic and Skipper Eye-Q Hospital whenever necessary, and returned to custody immediately after treatment.

The court stressed that all such movements must remain under ICPC supervision.

El-Rufai was earlier admitted to bail in the sum of ₦200 million with two sureties in like sum, while Adoga’s administrative bail was adopted by the court.

In a statement on Wednesday, ICPC Head of Media and Public Communications, J. Okor Odey, said the Commission remains committed to complying with court orders while ensuring lawful custody of the defendant pending the fulfilment of bail conditions. He added that the prosecution was being conducted diligently and in line with due process.
