Ganduje, Tambuwal win at Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has upheld the elections of Governors Umar Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State and Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State.

In the case of Kano, the apex court dismissed the appeal by Abba Kabiru-Yusuf of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against Ganduje in the March 9, 2019 governorship election.

The five-member panel, led by Justice Sylvester Ngwuta, in a unanimous ruling, said the PDP candidate had not demonstrated that the judgments of the tribunal and Court of Appeal were perverse and subsequently dismissed the case for lack of merit.

Other members of the panel are Justices Kudirat Kekekere-Ekun, Olukayode Ariwoola, Amina Augie and Uwani Abba-Aji.

The same court, in a separate ruling on the Sokoto petition, affirmed the election of Aminu Tambuwal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a unanimous judgment by a five-member panel led by Justice Sylvester Ngwuta, the apex court held that Ahmed Aliyu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) failed to prove his claims against the Tambuwal’s victory.

In the lead judgment read by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji, the court held that the evidence presented by Aliyu had no evidential and probative value having not been properly certified at the tribunal.

It subsequently dismissed the appeal.
