The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed an immediate investigation into allegations that two senior police officers were involved in the disappearance and alleged killing of activist and blogger Abubakar Idris, popularly known as Dadiyata.
The directive was issued on May 8, 2026, in an official acknowledgment letter from the IGP’s office at Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The letter, signed by the Principal Staff Officer to the IGP, CP Lateef Adio Ahmed, confirmed receipt of a petition from Kano-based lawyer Abba A. Hikima demanding “an immediate, independent and transparent investigation” into CSP Hussaini Gimba and CSP Hassan Gimba.
The petition stems from claims made by Muhammad Musa Kamarawa, a former Senior Special Assistant to ex-Zamfara State Governor and now Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle. Kamarawa alleged that the two officers threatened to kill him “as they killed Dadiyata and Saminu S/Fada Gusau amongst others in my presence at Operations Yaki Kaduna”.
IGP Disu has referred the matter to the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Police Monitoring Unit (PMU) for action. The letter assured the petitioners of the Force’s commitment to justice and accountability.
Dadiyata, a lecturer and outspoken social media commentator, was abducted from his home in Barnawa, Kaduna, in August 2019 and has remained missing for nearly seven years. His disappearance has been one of Nigeria’s most high-profile unresolved cases, with repeated calls from civil society and activists for a transparent probe.
As of now, the police have not released further details on the scope, timeline, or specific officers involved in the investigation. The IGP’s office has stressed that any officer found culpable will be held accountable under the law.
