Kano police launch violent crime response unit to tackle robbery, kidnapping

The Kano State Police Command has launched a new Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) to respond faster to armed robbery, kidnapping, carjacking, and other violent crimes in the state.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, announced the operational launch of the unit on Monday, May 18, 2026, at its headquarters on No. 2 Bank Road, Kano.

The VCRU was established on April 24, 2026, in line with a directive from Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu and the Nigeria Police Act 2020.

According to CP Bakori, the unit is a specialized, intelligence-driven tactical team designed to confront violent crimes with “speed, precision, and professionalism.”

“The goal is simple: reduce response time, dominate the public space, and deny criminals the freedom to operate in the state,” he said.

The VCRU is expected to respond faster to distress calls, prevent and control violent crimes through proactive deployments, and investigate and prosecute offenders without delay.

Bakori said officers selected for the unit underwent rigorous screening and training in tactical response, human rights, professional conduct, and intelligence handling.

He stressed that discipline, integrity, and respect for human rights would guide all VCRU operations, adding that he takes personal responsibility for the unit’s conduct and public image.

The unit will operate on real-time intelligence and information from the public. To strengthen oversight, the command has set up a Civilian Oversight Board made up of civil society leaders, traditional rulers, legal practitioners, and community representatives.

A public complaints desk has also been established at the VCRU base, with a commitment to acknowledge and respond to complaints within a set timeframe.

The VCRU headquarters is located at No. 2 Bank Road, adjacent to the Metro Area Command, for easy accessibility. The public can reach the unit 24/7 through dedicated hotlines 08032174478 and 09011473306, with assurances that information will be treated confidentially.

CP Bakori thanked Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for supporting the command and commended residents for their cooperation and timely information.

He urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, traders, and transporters to continue providing credible information on suspicious activities.

“This launch marks a new dawn in crime prevention, management, and control in Kano State. We are sending a clear message to criminals: Kano State will continue to be a no-safe-haven for violent offenders,” Bakori said.
