Missing youth corps member ‘found dead, body mutilated’

  • NYSC says investigation going on

Two weeks after she was declared missing in Abuja, the body of Stephanie Se-ember Terungwa, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has been found.

The family had said that Ms Terungwa was last seen on April 14, 2022 at Lokogoma area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to her uncle Richard Iorliam, Ms Terungwa was abducted alongside her one-year-old son after attending the weekly community development service (CDS). The baby was later found.

A statement issued the Director, Press and Public Relations, NYSC, Eddy Megwa said “The attention of NYSC Management has been drawn to the pictures making the rounds in the social media of a missing Corps Member deployed to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

“The corpse was found wearing the NYSC kakhi trouser with the face defaced beyond recognition. On account of this, Management reported the discovery to relevant security agencies to help identify the body.

“It was later confirmed that the remains was that of a missing Corps Member, Stephanie Se-Ember Terungwa, with State Code Number FC/21B/5807.

“Investigations are, however, currently on-going to unravel the identity of the perpetrators of the dastardly act in order to bring them to justice. May her soul rest in peace.”

In its own statement, the Students’ Union of the Joseph Tarka University, Makurdi, Benue State where she graduated, said her lifeless body has been found with parts of her body removed.

“We regret to confirm the sad demise of Miss Stephanie Seember Terungwa, a graduate of our varsity in the department of Microbiology.

“Recall that Miss Stephanie was declared missing on the 14th of April, 2022 in the city of Abuja where she’s currently undergoing her youth service.

“The media and corporate bodies had since then began an advocacy for her. Today, her body has been found lifeless, she has been murdered in her corps uniform and all private parts removed.

“Relevant tests have confirmed that the deformed corpse is hers. As a students’ union, we are conspicuously pained at this sad event and truly hope that posterity shall fight for her,” the statement said.

Dateline Nigeria reports that ritual killings have been on the rise in the country, with many blaming it on ‘get-rich-quick’ syndrome, especially among the youth.
