Senator Shehu Buba Umar, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the People’s Redemption Party (PRP).
In a statement issued in Bauchi on Sunday, May 24, 2026, by Comrade Sabo Mohammed, Special Adviser on Media and Communication to the senator, Buba said he left the APC over the absence of internal democracy, lack of fairness, marginalization of genuine members, and disregard for the views of grassroots supporters.
The senator said the decision followed extensive consultations with political associates, youth and women groups, party stakeholders, and supporters across Bauchi South and the state.
He described the PRP as a platform built on justice, transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, and people-oriented leadership, in line with the democratic values of the 1999 Constitution.
“My movement to the PRP is aimed at strengthening democratic governance, protecting the interests of ordinary Nigerians, and providing effective and responsive representation for the people of Bauchi State,” Buba said.
He argued that democracy can only thrive where political parties uphold fairness, equal opportunity, internal democracy, and active member participation. He added that it was time for patriotic leaders to unite and address poverty, unemployment, insecurity, economic hardship, and poor governance.
“Our people deserve better governance, better opportunities, and leadership that listens. Politics should be about service to humanity, justice, development, and improving the living conditions of the masses,” he stated.
Buba reaffirmed his commitment to championing policies on:
- Youth empowerment and job creation
- Quality education and scholarships
- Improved healthcare delivery
- Agricultural development and food security
- Economic growth and poverty reduction
- Rural and urban infrastructure
- Women empowerment and social welfare
- Security and community development
He called on supporters, political allies, and well-wishers to join him in the PRP to advance good governance, social justice, accountability, and sustainable development in Bauchi State.
Buba assured constituents that his commitment to their progress, unity, and development remained unwavering and pledged to continue providing purposeful leadership and effective representation.
Political analysts say the defection is a major development ahead of the 2027 general elections and could reshape political alignments while strengthening the opposition in the state and beyond. The move is also seen as part of a growing realignment among stakeholders seeking a more inclusive, people-centered democratic process in Nigeria.
