Kano police, military JTF recover 67 cows, other livestock from rustlers

Operatives of the Kano State Police Command and the Military Joint Task Force (JTF) have recovered 67 cows and other livestock from suspected cattle rustlers in Gwarzo and handed them over to their rightful owners.

The operation was carried out on May 6, 2026, at about 6:15 p.m., following credible intelligence that rustlers had stolen livestock from several villages in Gwarzo and surrounding areas along the Kano-Katsina border.

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, a combined team from Gwarzo Police Division and the Military JTF moved swiftly to the affected areas.

“On sighting the security team, the suspects opened fire but were overpowered due to the superior firepower and tactics of the joint force. The criminals fled the state, abandoning the stolen animals.

“Recovered items included 67 cows, one donkey, and one sheep. The livestock were secured at Gwarzo Police Division and, after proper identification and verification, were formally returned to their owners on May 7 through the respective district heads and under the supervision of the local government chairman,” the statement said.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, commended the operatives for their professionalism and the synergy with the military, reaffirming the Command’s resolve to eliminate criminal elements threatening rural communities and livelihoods.

A manhunt is ongoing for the fleeing suspects, while security monitoring continues in the affected communities to prevent further incidents.

CP Bakori urged residents, particularly in rural areas, to support the police by providing timely and credible information.

He assured that the Command remains committed to safeguarding lives, property, and the agricultural economy of Kano State.
