Six APC aspirants step down, endorse Shekarau for Kano Central Senate seat

Six All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirants for the Kano Central senatorial seat have withdrawn from the 2027 race and thrown their support behind former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau.

The decision was reached Sunday during a high-level meeting convened by Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf in Abuja. The meeting, which lasted several hours, ended with a consensus on backing Shekarau’s candidacy.

Speaking to journalists afterward, the aspirants — Usman Bala, Sha’aban Sharada, Muhammad Zango, Danyaro Yakasai, Abbas Sani Abbas, and Shehu Isa Driver — said they stepped down in the interest of unity and political stability in Kano ahead of the 2027 elections.

They described the endorsement as a collective effort to foster harmony within the party and the state.

Governor Yusuf’s Special Assistant on Social Media, Salisu Kosawa, confirmed the agreement in a Facebook post, stating that the governor led the meeting where the aspirants aligned behind Shekarau.

Shekarau only joined the APC in April after defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He announced the move at his Kano residence alongside PDP chieftain Senator Bello Gwarzo, in the presence of supporters and loyalists.

Addressing the crowd, he said the decision followed careful consideration of political options and received unanimous approval from those present.

Shekarau served as governor of Kano State from 2003 to 2011 and later as Minister of Education from 2014 to 2015.
