Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have successfully repelled a coordinated attack by ISWAP terrorists on a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Mairari, dealing a major setback to the group’s operational capability in the area.
The attack, which commenced late on Friday, December 12, and extended into the early hours of Saturday, was foiled through swift and coordinated ground and air operations by OPHK forces.
According to military sources, the terrorists attempted to breach the base using two Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIEDs). However, the devices were promptly detected and neutralised by vigilant troops, preventing any penetration of the FOB.
CCTV footage and field assessments confirmed that several terrorists were killed during the encounter, while others sustained serious injuries. Surviving elements were observed evacuating their dead and wounded from the scene.
In a follow-up operation, troops of OPHK Sector 3, supported by the Theatre Command Quick Reaction Group, the Nigeria Police Crack Team, and the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), conducted a thorough exploitation of the area.
The operation resulted in the discovery of additional terrorist casualties and the recovery of weapons, ammunition, and logistics abandoned during the failed assault.
Items recovered include AK-47 rifles, magazines and ammunition, PKT rounds, hand grenades, motorcycles, communication gadgets, combat gear, and medical supplies—materials believed to be used to sustain terrorist activities in the region.
The two neutralised VBIEDs were destroyed by defensive fire, causing damage to portions of the road. Military authorities confirmed that there was no breach of the FOB, underscoring the preparedness, vigilance, and resilience of the troops.
Troops are currently maintaining aggressive patrols around Mairari and adjoining areas to prevent further terrorist activity and to reassure local communities of sustained security presence.
Operation HADIN KAI reaffirmed its commitment to decisively defeating all terrorist elements and restoring lasting peace and stability across the North East, stressing that the failed attack highlights the professionalism and operational readiness of Nigerian troops.
