The Controller of Corrections for the Nigerian Correctional Service, Taraba State Command, CC John Francis, has called for closer collaboration between the Service and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to advance electoral participation for eligible inmates.
Francis made the call on May 17, 2026, while receiving the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Taraba State, Dr. Sa’ad Umar Idris, and his management team during a courtesy visit to the Command Headquarters in Jalingo.
Describing the visit as “timely and strategic,” the Controller said inter-agency cooperation is crucial for promoting democratic values and national development.
He noted that the Nigerian Correctional Service, under Controller General Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, remains committed to reforms that include advocating for the electoral rights of inmates who are not legally disenfranchised.
“There is a compelling need for closer collaboration between INEC and the Nigerian Correctional Service, particularly in the area of electoral participation for eligible inmates,” Francis said.
“Globally, progressive democracies increasingly recognise the importance of extending voting rights to incarcerated persons who are not legally disenfranchised. This approach reinforces the principles of justice and equality and serves as a tool for rehabilitation, fostering a sense of belonging and responsibility among inmates.”
He expressed confidence that sustained engagement between both institutions would strengthen public trust, enhance civic inclusion, and promote national cohesion.
Earlier, REC Dr. Sa’ad Umar Idris commended the Command for its professionalism and discipline. He said the visit was aimed at fostering mutual familiarisation, strengthening collaboration on sensitisation and capacity building, and sustaining the cordial relationship between INEC and the Nigerian Correctional Service.
Idris also highlighted INEC’s ongoing advocacy for voting rights of eligible inmates, as well as security and service personnel deployed during elections.
The visit ended with the signing of the visitors’ book and a group photograph with the Command’s management team.
The statement was signed by DSC A.M. Agabison, Public Relations Officer, Nigerian Correctional Service, Taraba State Command.
