Malami picks ADC governorship form, declares ‘state of emergency on misgovernance’ in Kebbi

Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami, SAN, has formally secured the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship nomination form for the 2027 Kebbi State election, citing worsening insecurity, poverty, and collapse of public services in the state.

In a statement issued on May 9, 2026, Malami said he could no longer remain silent while Kebbi “sinks deeper into a humanitarian and governance crisis.”

He declared a “State of Emergency on Misgovernance” in the state and pledged to run on a platform of security, education reform, and economic revival.

The former minister painted a grim picture of the state’s condition, citing data that showed over 67 percent of children aged 6 to 15 are out of school, with Kebbi’s attendance rate among the lowest in Nigeria.

He also said more than 88 percent of children live in multidimensional poverty, while hundreds of severely malnourished children reportedly died within nine months in 2025.

On healthcare, Malami noted that maternal mortality remains among the highest in the country, with malaria continuing to claim the lives of children under five and thousands of rural pregnant women lacking access to antenatal care.

He added that insecurity has forced many farmers to abandon their lands as banditry and kidnapping for ransom persist across several communities.

“This is not the Kebbi we deserve. This is not the future our children deserve,” he said. “The era of empty propaganda and ineffective leadership must come to an end.”

Malami said his mission is to restore security, rebuild public education, strengthen healthcare delivery, revive agriculture, and create opportunities for young people. He stated he has “no personal agenda other than service, accountability, and sustainable development.”

The ADC aspirant vowed that “there will be no retreat and no surrender” in the effort to rescue the state and pledged to rebuild Kebbi into a “safer, stronger, and more prosperous state for all.”
